![]() ![]() It’s not just revisiting Half-Life’s campaign though that serves Opposing Force, the opening levels as you crash your helicopter, and are forced to go through several parts of the facility leaking pools of toxic waste, as well as going through a fiery sewer network really ramp up the tension and set pieces early on. Highlights of the campaign include revisiting Freeman’s tram ride, seeing him travel into Xen (and the ability to create a paradox. The game takes roughly 5-6 hours, a pretty impressive length, over a dozen chapters as you go through an even more crumbled and wrecked Black Mesa. ![]() In it, you get new weaponary, a new race of aliens to fight, as well as Black Ops soldiers, and even a plot line which sheds just a little more light onto the mysterious G-Man. Opposing Force is a game taking place parallel to the Black Mesa incident, as you play Corporal Adrian Shepard, one of the HECU sent out to silence the facility and kill Gordon Freeman. So with DLC becoming more and more prevelant in our game world, it’s perhaps a testement that the first expansion pack to the classic video game Half-Life, would wind up to one of the best expansions ever to a video game, and would be a beloved part of the Half-Life universe. The Walking Dead’s 400 Days, The Last of Us’s Left Behind, Metro: Last Light’s little insight DLCs into various side characters, Borderlands 2’s various quest packs expanding the comedy and lore of the universe, and perhaps most notably, Bioshock Infinite’s Burial at Sea, looking to be a finale to the Bioshock franchise for the time being due to Irrational’s closure, but I imagine will be picked up by another devolper in the future. However, as the triple A titles make it clear that DLC is here to stay, more companies seem intent on not just releasing additional weapons, multiplayer maps and the like, many games have come out with story related DLC. In today’s gaming world, where DLC is often very common amongst almost all big title releases, with the likes of pretty much every 2K game and Call of Duty offering season passes right out of the gate, and even games shipping with the DLC already locked on the disc, it’s become clear to all major game publishers the sheer amount of money to be made off, of additional charges on your favourite games. ![]()
